While preparing for an outdoor summer wine and art festival event at a luxury country club in California, A K Johnston Production Design created a wonderful new concept that became the perfect alternative to a standard event tent. Their vision took advantage of the venue's gorgeous panoramic views, which would've been obscured by the walls of a traditional outdoor enclosure. With the help of Rose Brand they created "The California Canopy," a structure that emphasizes the airiness, beauty and organic nature of any outdoor venue.

Rose Brand manufactured the custom-sewn canopy from white Poly Muslin; a cloth that drapes and swags beautifully. Rose Brand also developed matching truss covers from white Tendo stretch-fabric to soften the look of the supports and help them blend-in beautifully with the canopy.

The fabric, truss and rigging elements created a strong, stable and aesthetic structure that diffused the natural sunlight and cast interesting shadows and warm glows until dusk. Even during a 90 degree afternoon, the canopy offers more cooling than standard canopies due to the breathability of the Rose Brand fabric.

Once the sun had set, the design relied on fixture lighting. With over 600 linear feet of rigging points, over 80 lighting fixtures were connected to the structure. Some fixtures were used to backlight the panels and others to spot light gallery areas, pin spots, and washes. Keep in mind that had a standard tent been used, they would have needed lighting during the night, as well as the day.

In the configuration shown, A K Johnston rigged thousands of pounds to a 12-legged, 84' x 64' structure (all within rigging standards). Using the rigging points and open trussing, they were able to place speakers overhead, hang stage backdrop velour, and mount oversized canvas paintings directly from the structure, with no hassle or structural issues. The structure allows for an enormous amount of flexibility in lighting and design, and has garnered praise from event professionals across the country. The California Canopy is configurable to 16 standard sizes and competitively priced with any standard rental tent.

I really like how that fabric took light. I would love to find a use for it in a production.

What a great company with great products. I live in a large city but have had challenges finding suitable fabrics for my church prodctions. I called, discussed my needs with Donna, placed the order and received my fabrics in a very timely manner. I have and will continue to recommended Rosebrand to others who have similar challenges.

Beautiful.  Does it give any protection against rain?

This is a great concept for a tough situation.  The openness of the tent and the way the fabric took the lighting makes this an ideal setup for outdoor weddings, corporate events or gatherings.  I would be curious as to the costs for the labor and materials to make this happen.  I have found Rose Brand to beat any other price and have always provided us with great support and material.

A conventional tent can feel 'claustrophobic'. Using fabric in this manner truly opens up the 'tent' concept.

This is a lovely alternative to a walled tent.  It has the feel of light billowy clouds, very elegant.  Also the thought of lighting or projection is limitless.

This would be a nice alternative here in Austin, TX where clients appreciate a "greener" feeling for events.

Looks like a fantastic effect. I like the way it can soften sunlight yet still keep the area bright.

Hey Everyone!  I created these canopies with Rose Brand and rent them out nationally.

To answer a few questions: No, it is not rainproof- but does shield against dewfall and sprinkles.

Yes; this takes natural and artificial light gorgeously!  Projections from the rear are truly limitless and your options to do anything with the structure is also quite limitless.  This is an IFR cyc material in a seamless 20' by 100' run, but we have other sizes on-hand.

Email us on our website: www.akjohnston.com if you are interested in more photos, rental or production nationally.

It set a beautiful atmosphere - light and airy - but also protected. I wonder if they purchased the fabric/labor or was this considered a rental? I design stage backdrops for my church and have used Rosebrand several times - I'm always satisfied with the product and the service!

How structurally solid is the truss with all that fabric and no diagonal supports on any of the legs?  Wouldn't winds be a potential hazard?

What a great alternative to the outdoor tent. I would like to see a solution that is rain proof as that is sooo often the requirement of these types of structures.

It never rains in California (?) or so says the lyric.  No doubt that's why this solution to the event tent is referred to as the "California Canopy". Tent sidewalls do certainly create a feeling of claustrophobia but I'm thinking of the conditions back east for those large benefits in the spring when just about any type of weather must be anticipated. Mr. Johnson, sprinkles landing on the dinner tables beneath the open supportive truss would certainly dampen their party.

The way the light comes through it would make it work well with stained glass.

How does this material get attached ? Is it just draped over the top of the truss
structure or is there some type of elastic on the ends?

This product was indeed conceptualized by Austin Knight Johnston. Rose Brand provided the fabric and did the sewing of the piece. Its open pocket design allows for simple rigging possibilities and varied looks. Mr. Johnston owns the California Canopy and it is currently a part of his working rental catalogue. At its conception The California Canopy was designed for an outdoor application in sunny and dry Southern California. It was designed knowing that inclement weather conditions are traditionally few and far between therefore, making it a great design for his Southern California (and other dry region) client base although he has provided the piece for customers in the Mid West and Northeast United States. Remember also that what you are seeing is the first version of this product. As time goes on Mr. Johnston will be looking for ways to improve the product as well as expand fabric and color options.
